Progressive Overload, Explained Properly
August 3, 2026 · 6 min read

Progressive overload is the only non-negotiable principle in strength training. Everything else is preference.
It is not just adding weight. You can overload by adding reps, adding sets, slowing the tempo, improving range of motion, or shortening rest. Weight is the most obvious lever, not the only one.
Use double progression. Pick a rep range — say 8 to 12. Work up until you can hit 12 reps on every set with good form, then add weight and drop back to 8. Repeat. It is slow, and it works for years.
Log everything. You cannot progress a number you did not record. Weight, reps, and how hard the last set felt.
Accept that it slows down. A beginner adds weight weekly. After a year it becomes monthly. That is not stalling — that is what an intermediate looks like.
Deload when the numbers stop moving for three weeks. Cut volume in half for a week, keep the intensity, and come back stronger.
