The Beginner Gym Guide

Walking into a gym for the first time is mostly a confidence problem, not a fitness problem.

Arrive with a plan. The single biggest difference between people who stay and people who quit is whether they knew what they were doing before they walked in. Write down three to five exercises, the sets, and the reps. That is a plan.

Start with machines, then earn the free weights. Machines fix the movement path for you, which lets you learn effort before you learn balance. Two to three weeks of machine work builds enough base strength to make dumbbells feel manageable.

Learn the etiquette fast. Re-rack your weights. Wipe the bench. Do not sit on a machine scrolling between sets. Ask "how many sets do you have left?" instead of hovering.

Rest properly. Sixty to ninety seconds for accessory work, two to three minutes for heavy compound lifts. Rushing rest makes every set worse.

Expect the first month to feel awkward. It is supposed to. By week four the layout, the routine and the rhythm stop taking any thought at all.
